About us…

Our Story
In 2018 our Scout Group celebrated it’s 40th Anniversary.

We were originally situated at St Leonard’s Church Hall until, in 1985, we acquired an old army hut from Weeton Barracks. With the help of parents and leaders, and many hours of work, our new HQ hut was built, and we moved into the grounds of Middleforth School.

In the mid 1990’s we added a new room to our building which is now known as the Scout room. Again, this was built by the leaders and parents of the Group with the help of a charitable donation. We received a further grant (from Lancashire Constabulary) and we used this money for a much needed new kitchen.

Our little meeting place has served us well over the years and in 2012 we decided we were beginning to look a little tired. A grant allowed us to upgrade the toilets and heating system, along with the entrance path. At the same time, our Group funds paid for double glazing to the front windows and thorough insulation of the main hall. The hall was officially re-opened by the Mayors of Penwortham and South Ribble in September 2013.

Our Group is truly a story of the community working together.

We have 1 Squirrel Drey, 1 Beaver Colony, 1 Cub Pack and 1 Scout Troop. We are in the process of growing the Group following the Covid 19 pandemic, with numbers reducing due to this.

No Group functions without the unpaid and tireless work of the Leaders, Executive and Fundraising Committee. We have been privileged at 9th Penwortham to have had some of the best and most dedicated Leaders in the District. However, we do need more and never say no to help. If you can help us in any way and can spare an hour a week, even if you just want to offer to brew up, please ask the Leaders. ALL HELP IS WELCOME as we cannot do it on our own.

We are currently advertising for a Scout Leadership Team. If you are interested or know anyone who would be interested in applying, please contact Anne Freeman (Group Scout Leader) via email on gsl.9thpen@southribblescouts.org.uk for more information.

Also, we are looking for volunteers to fill the position of Group Secretary. If this interests you, please contact your Section Leader.

We do have the full support and backing of our sponsoring authority, St Leonard’s Church, and whilst it is not compulsory, we would like our young people to join us at Church Parade services. We attend Church Parades for occasions such as Remembrance Sunday, St George’s Day, Harvest Festival and Mother’s Day.
